Social Impact of Music Making

How does culture affect the common good and social cohesion? Cultural opportunities are often overlooked. Social workers, organizations, cultural practitioners and other decision-makers face the challenge of effectively communicating the non-economic social impact of their interventions to the public and in policy-making processes.

Unlike sport, culture was not included in the UNESCO Pact for the Future as a resource in relation to “well-being”. Even in national and regional structures, culture often falls below the perception threshold as a “nice to have”. These areas are therefore susceptible to financial austerity measures, thereby jeopardizing their impact.

SOCIAL IMPACT of MUSIC MAKING (SIMM) contributes to closing this gap with current and topic-related research seminars and to networking prospective and established researchers worldwide. From July 27 to July 30, 2026, the research cluster will meet at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences / European University of Technology in the Department of Social Work on the topic 
“Participative Opera & Music theater projects”.

With the public presentation in cooperation with the Schader Foundation, we want to enter into an exchange with researchers, cultural professionals and the interested specialist public. The current state of research, methods and results of the collaboration will be presented by the researchers themselves and by the project's Scientific Committee, followed by a focus on feedback and exchange.

Wie wirkt Kultur auf das Gemeinwohl und den sozialen Zusammenhalt? Kulturelle Möglichkeiten werden oft übersehen. Personen in der Sozialen Arbeit, Organisationen, Kulturschaffende und weitere Entscheidungsträger*innen stehen vor der Herausforderung, nicht-wirtschaftliche soziale Auswirkungen ihrer Interventionen in die Öffentlichkeit und in politische Entscheidungsprozesse effektiv zu vermitteln. 

Der Bereich Kultur wurde im Gegensatz zum Bereich Sport nicht als Ressource in Bezug auf das „Wohlbefinden“ im UNESCO Pact for the Future eingebunden. Auch in nationalen und regionalen Strukturen steht Kultur als „nice to have“ oft unter der Wahrnehmungsschwelle. Daher sind diese Bereiche anfällig für finanzielle Sparmaßnahmen und gefährden dadurch ihre Wirkung.

SOCIAL IMPACT of MUSIC MAKING (SIMM) leistet einen Beitrag, diese Lücke mit aktuellen und themenbezogenen Forschungsseminaren zu schließen und angehende wie etablierte Forscher*innen weltweit zu vernetzen. Von 27. Juli bis 30. Juli 2026 tagt das Forschungscluster an der Hochschule Darmstadt / European University of Technology im Fachbereich Soziale Arbeit zum Thema 

„Participative Opera & Music theatre projects“.

Mit der öffentlichen Präsentation in Kooperation mit der Schader-Stiftung wollen wir in den Austausch mit Forschenden, Kulturschaffenden und interessierter Fachöffentlichkeit kommen. Es werden aktuelle Forschungsstände, Methoden und Ergebnisse der Zusammenarbeit durch die Forschenden selbst und durch das Wissenschaftliche Komitee des Projekts präsentiert, im Anschluss daran steht Rückmeldung und Austausch im Mittelpunkt.
