Thus, what is required by all countries to effectively tackle contemporary challenges such as climate change, energy and food security, air and water pollution, or loss of biodiversity is more than a technocratic fix or the adjustment of singular policy measures?

Green Transformation in the Global South - GreeTS
Societies must engage in far reaching change processes that span across sectors, scales and social, political and economic spaces: What is thus needed is the design and implementation of green transformations. Corresponding processes and policies set out just, equitable and effective development pathways that integrate social and political concerns beyond physical decarbonisation, the diffusion of environmentally-friendly technologies and market incentives.
As a contribution to the complementary research agenda on transformative change, the research project “Green Transformations in the Global South (GreeTS)”, conducted by Technische Universität Darmstadt, the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London), Center for Tropical Agricultural Research and Education (CATIE) Costa Rica and the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), has been devoted to empirically analyze green transformations (from policy design to implementation) in Vietnam and Costa Rica that evolved from changes in the energy and land use sectors. Assessments were made against the background of an innovative conceptual apparatus with a special focus on the impact of state-society relations and the management of trade-offs related to green transformations.
