Abstract Demographic change, segregation and social urban renewal from a North Rhine-Westphalian perspective

From a West German perspective the processes of demographic change and segregation are very differentiated, spatially. For example most of the larger towns register a declining population due to Suburbanisation and other forms of out-migration or high mortality rates. Especially the cities of the Ruhr-Area Germany’s biggest old industrial region have to cope since decades with these phenomenons as well as they were and still are melting pots for people from other countries. Other cities, e. g. Bonn, still have a population growth due to positive migration rates or a positive relation of births and deaths. Whether it concerns the decline of the population, the growing percentage of elderly people or persons with a migrant background the cities and regions in North Rhine-Westphalia experience it all different: Growth and decline between cities and as well between regions exist at the same time. Especially the processes of social, ethnic and demographic segregation are very complex and related to each other. On city level the three processes do overlap and influence each other. The lecture will focus on the different dimensions of segregation in North Rhine-Westphalian cities.

Likewise different are the strategies to cope with the change: Many of the projects and measures taken are set in the broader framework of publically funded area-based programmes like the Federal-Länder Programmes "Die Soziale Stadt" (Socially Integrative City) and "Stadtumbau West" of which examples will be given.
